The man in the water

Tony Brochado: man in the water

With his thick, long greyish hair and a beard that occupies more than it should of his face, Tony sails along the towns’ streets with his own, special perspectives. Ideas and notions that surge from the depths of San Matías Bay.

Since the beginnings of the 80’s, when he arrived in the area, with his bag and guitar expectant, in search of success and triumph, Tony Brochado walked different roads. It was known from years before, when he lived in his “home-town” of Uruguay, that his world was underwater.

Shellfish came first and then his role as an investigative diver for the “Almirante Storni” Institute of Marine and Fishing Biology, gave him a way of life that he loves: observing the unknown in the depths of the Bay.

Tony has made some fascinating discoveries thanks to his “combing” of the area. Bottles, “pastecas” and various naval antiques decorate his house.

The search for nazi submarine that sank in the area of “Los Loros” cove brought tonys’ work to a national interest level in which investigators asked for tonys’ help. Long, gruelling hours and today, 10 years after the search, Tony thinks that there are no signs of the infamous U Boote in the established zone, and the story becomes a regional myth.

The years have helped Tony form his own diving company, through which he carries out subacuatic repairs on merchant ships. But his life isn’t just “underwater”. He has also immersed himself in the “sanantoniense” essence. With his guitar, poetry and personal ideas, he has become a reference in local culture.

Keeping in time with time, he canalises his thoughts and feelings through his blog “hombre al agua”. –and h has just finished a new demo of latin-american music. Mean while, he’s waiting anxiously for his 50’s, so that he can continue renovating projects and concreting dreams.
