Patagonian Acuicultura

Río Negro holds one of the best marine environments in the world: San Matías Bay. This marine and fishing basin, ubicated in the north of Patagonia, possesses a wide variety of marine environments, of high biological diversity. Its waters are contaminant-free and for more than 2 decades its fishing resources have been exploited in a sustainable manner.

San Matías Bay’ waters host a great variety of fish and molluscs of important commercial value. Some of them (oysters, mussels, scallops, sea-breams and sole) have been the object of studies in Argentina and present a great potential for development on a great scale. Río Negro offers important water extensions for “acuicola” concessions in San Matías Bay. Most of these zones can be found in an officially classified zone for mollusc production. (Zone ARRN001) –and adding to this, the legal activity law (Law no. 2829) favours invest – ments in acuicultura.

This official support also extends to official organisms, (Mollusc production Laboratory / “Almirante Storni “fishing and marine biology Institute”).
