IBMP Institute of Marine and Fishing Biology

Who we are

The “Almirante Storni” Institute of Marine and Fishing Biology (IBMPAS) is an investigative organism, dependant of the Comahue national university and Río Negro Province production ministry. It was founded in 1974.

What we do

We elaborate and develop investigative tasks and projects focused on hydro-biological and fishing resources knowledge in the Río Negro Province jurisdiction. Our aims are to investigate and assess the Provincial Fishing administration in matters of fishing resources management, as well as extension, capacitation and, knowledge transference and private and state sector services.

How we do it

We are organized into investigation operative areas and execute numerous programmes and projects (an evaluation and management programme of “Demersales” fishing, an evaluation and management programme of “Bentonicas” fishing, on-board observers programme, a sea-culture programme and fishing sector capacitation programme). Most of the investigation activities are funded by various national and international sources ( Comahue national university, CONICET, PNU-GEF, etc.). We also carry out activities of university teaching, of which University Technician in fishing and sea-culture production and post-graduate courses in Marine and Fishing sciences (Marine ecology, Fishing biology, Biological oceanography and the evaluation and management of fishing) are considered the best.

Why we do it

Because it’s essential to know the Bay’s resources, so as to be able to elaborate an argument with respect to the fishing problem. Knowledge is necessary for the development of sustainable fishing, to know the resources, form and instruct human resources, to carry out activities of extension and service to the community and offer assessment and technological transference.

Because we have to have answers to regional development, based on scientific knowledge of sea resources, the development of sustainable fishing with the help of IBMPAS in local activities, offering knowledge back up in the elaboration of Río Negro laws: Laws Nº 196 NULL, Nº 2519 and Nº 2829 were all formed with the help of the Institute.

We do what we do, to be, able to know the Argentine seas resources and its continental basins, to contribute to a political plan in answer to the fishing problem and to co-ordinate a national, provincial and council investigative action, so as to implement an integral knowledge plan.
