Fishing Certification

Who we are

We are a work-team made up of Río Negro fishing management, the IBMPAS and the FVSA. We are supported by various international conservation organisations like the WWF, the MSC and the SFF-RLF.

What we do

Since 2003, we have worked on the development of sustainable management plans and MSC certification in hake and multi-specific fishing of commercial invertebrates (scallops, mussels, purple clams and octopus) in San Matías Bay. Certification opens new markets therefore bettering the economic yield of the captures and lowering the impact on the resource and the environment. Our long-tern vision is to use the MSC badge as an instrument for regional development.

How we do it

We promote the generation and exchange of the Bay’s patrimony information and the strategies and regional developments used to conserve it. We forward regional communication to consolidate a common horizon for the Bay. Supporting the integration of productive projects that promote responsible use of the Bay’s heritage, vinculating certification with other economic activities, like tourism and gastronomy.

Why we do it

Because we believe the Bay’s heritage (marine and coast) signifies development, work and is part of history, with its beautiful countryside that brings profit to the country. And we want to show the advantages of sustainable sea and its social, economic and cultural benefits, so that our experience can be repeated in other parts of the world. We want the Bay to be a place of healthy and productive ecosystems that promote sustainable fishing activities, recognised regionally, nationally and internationally. A site that satisfies needs, desires and dreams for present and future generations. That allows the local community to take advantage of the economic incentives and the international markets by way of certification.
