The Comahue National University Department of Marine Sciences

Who we are

We are a Marine Sciences group of professionals and Technicians who integrate the Comahue National University Department of Marine Sciences, a public institution of advanced education. Our department depends academically on the Regional Atlantic zone University centre (CURZA) that is located in Viedma city, although our central office is in West San Antonio, Río Negro province.

Our department is well-connected to the “Alte Storni” Institute of Marine and Fishing Biology (IBMyP), an investigative institution belonging to Comahue National University and Río Negro Province Production Ministry. At the moment, many of the IBMyP integrants are also members and teachers of the Marine Sciences Department, “founders” of which in 1998.

What we do

In this department, we teach a pre-grade career in Fishing Production and Sea-culture Technician.

 – And soon will be offering a grade career of Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology.

The teachers and investigators who make up the Department in various areas and orientations also participate in investigative teams who carry out extension and investigation projects dealing with marine biology fishing, sea-culture and environmental conservation.

How we do it

Through the actual career course and the soon to be Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology. We also carry out studies focused on Marine resources and its knowledge transference.

Why we do it

Because we share the same vision of other organisations, be them governmental or not, that the San Matías Bay should be conserved and managed in a sustainable manner. (Organisations just like us that have developed in or around the Bay).

By this way, we can guarantee maximum exploitation without putting in danger the habitat of future generations.

We do it to contribute, by way of the formation of qualified human resources, to a correct administration, conservation and natural resources, management and to the San Matías Bay’s diverse eco-systems and surrounding zones.
