Río Negro fish products face up against heavy competition in worldwide markets. There exists a great demand globally for sanitary controlled products which come from responsible and sustainable management areas.
Due to this demand for quality, the Río Negro province has launched a programme to certify all the all the San Matías boats under international standards of sustainability. Consumers, worried about the abuse of overfishing and environmental danger find in the products under these standards peace of mind, knowing that their eating habits do not contribute to over-exploitation. During 2004 and 2005, hake-fishing in the Bay, completed the pre-evaluation stage with “excellent colours” (MSC) foreseeing the complete certification in 2006. In 2005, the sustainable evaluation process of artisanal fishing of molluscs began (purple clams, tehuelche scallops, mussels and octopus) in San Matías Bay. Well-know NGO’s participate and support these processes.
